Since the 1980’s Japanese motorcycle manufactures were increasingly active in racing and Japanese sports bikes were gaining popularity in the world. During the height of the racing boom, the rising number of accidents on public roads lead to the impression that sports bikes are too dangerous. This change in attitude and drastically increased insurance fees had a devastating impact on sales.
In 1993 the struggling manufacturer Ducati announced their first “Naked Bike”, the M900. A rather uncommon, cheap to maintain bike that was far off the fiery Super-Sports Ducati had built a reputation on. Despite being exposed to severe criticism upon its debut, frame construction and engine were well-engineered street versions of their high-performance counterparts used superbikes and with its light handling and torquey L-Twin engine, the M900 soon gained traction.
For the development of the M900 Complete Machine, BITO R&D put a strong focus on improving the overall balance. After extended in-house testing, we choose the combination of 94mm Cosworth high compression pistons and 39㎜ FCR carburetors to optimize engine characteristics. Letting go of the stock wheels and exhaust in favor of a titanium system and MAGTAN reduced weight. JB 6POT calipers and 320mm cast-iron discs replaced the, admittedly powerful yet vague and dull, brake system, giving the rider excellent feedback and a great sense of security.
